James Peebles, Princeton University, Astro Seminar, A Tale of Two Theories: Missing Mass in 1980 and Galaxy Formation Today (5:00 PM - 6:00 PM, 726 Broadway, 940, CCPP Seminar)

-- Description: In the 1970s the lack of understanding of masses on the scales of galaxies to clusters of galaxies was well established but not much advertised. Other lines of research seemed more promising; missing mass was in effect a Dirty Little Secret. That changed in the early 1980s with the recognition that nonbaryonic missing mass, now termed dark matter, allowed reconciliation of the clumpy matter distribution with the smooth sea of thermal radiation left from early stages of expansion of the universe. I will argue for another Dirty Little Secret: little advertised problems with the current theory of galaxy formation. It's deja vu all over again: these anomalies will teach us something of value, maybe about how to improve the method of analysis of galaxy formation within the current cosmological model, or maybe about how to find an even better cosmology.
