Sjoert van Velzen, NYU-CCPP, HE Astro guest lecture, Introduction to Stellar Tidal Disruption by SMBH and Overview of Observations (11:00 AM - 12:15 PM, 726 Broadway, 940, CCPP Seminar)

-- Description: A star that passes too close to a massive black hole will be torn apart by tidal forces, leading to the injection of a large amount of gas close to the black hole horizon. The resulting flare of thermal emission provides a unique signpost for studies of quiescent black holes and can be used to probe the extremes of accretion physics. Stellar tidal disruption events (TDEs) have the potential to become ubiquitous tools in the era of time-domain astronomy. However, before we can use TDE light curves as tools to measure black hole mass or spin, we first have to understand their emission mechanism. In particular, we need to answer one fundamental question: what is the origin of optical TDE emission? I will review our progress towards answering this question using multi-wavelength observations.
