Hogg's primary interest is in the formation and evolution of galaxies, with a concentration on observational evidence for the fundamental processes of accretion by which galaxies and larger structures grow.
He also works on fundamental astronomy issues relating to the planning, execution, and scientific analysis of large surveys. His work frequently involves the management and simultaneous analysis of large, heterogeneous data sets.
